The nickel silver non-precious coin of Ukraine is dedicated to the famous spiritual landmark of Kyiv, the St. Michael’s Golden-Domed Monastery. The architectural masterpiece was originally built in the center of Kyiv in the XII century, then renovated in the XVIII century, so it had the traces of both architectural styles. The original monastery was demolished by Soviet authorities in 1930’s, but rebuilt again in 1999 according to its previous look. The monastery is minted on the reverse with the silhouettes of twelve apostles in front of it. The name of the depicted cathedral is explained along the rim. The obverse of the piece is decorated with Byzantine-style ornament, which frames the legends reading the name of the country and denomination of the coin. The year of issue and the national emblem are shown there as well.
