The famous Russian artist of XIX century Karl Bryullov was born in Saint Petersburg as a son of a Huguenot descent. His father was involved into fine arts and so do Karl and his brother. Karl Bryullov was educated at the Imperial Academy of Arts, but never fully followed the classical style which was taught to him. After graduating from the Academy Karl went to Italy which he always was enchanted by. There, in Rome, Bryullov created his finest works including portraits, genre paintings and historical pictures. The latter one called “The Last Day of Pompeii” made him famous. One of the most recognizable portraits painted by Karl Bryullov is a picture called “Daughters of Pacini”, and the colored image of it decorates the obverse of the rectangular silver coin issued by Niue in 2010 as a part of the series dedicated to the painters. The effigy of the British Queen is placed in the upper left corner of the coin. The opposite side of the special coin shows the colored image of self-portrait of Karl Bryullov surrounded by the relief and colored images from his other works.
