Tokens with some scratches and oxides (please, check photos).
The circa 1900 Malaysia Penang Kong Hock Kongsi token set brings together five historic brass denominations: 50, 10, 5, 2 and 1 cents, offering a fascinating glimpse into private commercial currency from colonial-era Penang. The fronts display bold denomination numerals surrounded by Chinese characters identifying Kong Hock Kongsi and decorative geometric border motifs; the 50, 10 and 5 pieces also show the company name in Latin letters. The smaller tokens retain distinctive Chinese-character layouts, with the 1-cent piece featuring a central round hole. Their reverses are exceptionally utilitarian, largely plain and individually counterstamped with inventory or identification numbers including 30, 219, 70, 31 and 10. Visible patina, toning, scratches and circulation marks reinforce the authentic historical character of the group. Kongsi organizations were important Chinese communal and commercial associations throughout Southeast Asia, and private tokens served practical exchange and accounting functions where company-issued money circulated locally. With five denominations, varied designs and original aged surfaces, this unusual Penang set is especially appealing to collectors of Malaysian tokens, Chinese diaspora history and merchant currency.
