Mexico 1 onza Libertad Angel of Independence silver coin 1985

The 1985 Mexico 1 Onza Libertad is a classic .999 fine silver bullion coin and an early issue of Mexico’s celebrated Libertad series. The reverse features the original Winged Victory design, inspired by the Angel of Independence, shown full-length with raised wreath, extended feathered wings and flowing drapery. The famous volcanic peaks Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl form the mountainous background. Visible inscriptions identify 1 ONZA, PLATA PURA, 1985, MEXICO, LEY .999 and the Mo mint mark. The obverse presents Mexico’s national coat of arms in bold relief: an eagle gripping a snake in its beak and talon while standing on a prickly pear cactus, with oak and laurel branches and ribbon below. A geometric border frames both sides. The eagle and snake symbolize one of Mexico’s foundational legends, while Winged Victory represents independence and freedom. This early Libertad offers an appealing combination of precious silver, national symbolism and iconic Mexican numismatic art.
