This Mexico 100 Pesos 2012 bimetallic coin from the Numismatic Heritage series honors the colonial coinage of Felipe III, King of Spain from 1598 to 1621. The central design reproduces the irregular appearance of a historic hammered cob coin, dominated by a crowned quartered shield containing heraldic devices, with traces of surrounding period legends and symbols emphasizing the character of early Spanish-American currency. The silver-colored center is framed by a golden-colored ring bearing “HERENCIA NUMISMATICA DE MEXICO,” the Mo Mexico City mint mark, 2012 date, $100 denomination and a dotted border. The reverse presents Mexico’s national coat of arms: a detailed eagle with spread wings grasping a snake while perched on a prickly pear cactus, with visible cactus pads and fruits. Oak and laurel branches tied by a ribbon complete the composition beneath “ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS.” Cob coins were individually struck from roughly prepared pieces of metal, giving them their distinctive irregular designs and making them an important part of colonial numismatic history. Certified PCGS PL69, this bimetallic issue offers an attractive connection between historic Felipe III coinage and modern Mexican collecting.
