This Mexico 1 Peso silver coin of 1947, KM-456, honors José María Morelos, a leading figure of the Mexican War of Independence. Struck at the Mexico City Mint in .500 silver, the issue had a mintage of 61,460,000. The reverse presents Morelos in a bold right-facing portrait wearing his characteristic headscarf, with carefully modeled facial features, hair and folds of fabric. MORELOS appears below, while UN PESO, 1947, Mo and 0.500 identify the denomination, date, mint and silver fineness. The obverse displays Mexico’s national coat of arms beneath ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS: a finely feathered eagle grips a snake while standing on a flowering prickly pear cactus growing from a rock, with oak and laurel branches tied by a ribbon below. Morelos became one of the principal leaders of the independence movement after Miguel Hidalgo and helped formulate its political goals. This historic silver peso combines an important national figure with classic Mexican heraldry.
