This 1998 Mexico 2 Onzas Libertad, KM-614, is a .999 fine silver bullion coin combining the nation’s independence symbolism with an exceptional display of Mexican heraldic history. The reverse depicts the Winged Victory, the celebrated Angel of Independence, standing atop the Independence Column with magnificent feathered wings, an outstretched arm and flowing drapery. Behind her are the volcanic peaks Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl, a detailed valley landscape and cactus plants. The inscriptions 2 ONZAS PLATA PURA, 1998, LEY .999 and the Mexico City Mint mark complete the scene. The obverse centers on Mexico’s national coat of arms: an eagle gripping a serpent while perched on a prickly pear cactus, above oak and laurel branches. Surrounding it are ten historic versions of Mexico’s eagle emblem, each displaying different forms of the bird, cactus, wreaths and heraldic details. The 1998 Libertad design celebrates the evolution of Mexico’s national identity and independence, making this substantial bullion issue especially attractive to collectors of Libertads, Mexican history and classic world silver.
