This 1988 Mexico 1 Onza Cuauhtémoc “De Balancín” silver token is a striking proof issue certified PCGS PR 70. The obverse presents a highly detailed right-facing portrait of Cuauhtémoc wearing an elaborate feathered headdress with layered plumes, decorated headband, circular ornaments and patterned clothing. The date 1988 appears above, while the inscriptions identify Cuauhtémoc and the .720 silver fineness. Cuauhtémoc was the last Aztec emperor, remembered for leading the defense of Tenochtitlan during the Spanish conquest and becoming an enduring figure in Mexican history. The reverse depicts a traditional balance or screw press with a broad horizontal beam, central spindle, stepped mechanism and substantial base, accompanied by the inscription CASA DE MONEDA DE MEXICO and the Mexican Mint mark. Brilliant mirrored fields contrast beautifully with the sculpted devices. Certified at the perfect PR 70 grade by PCGS, this unusual token combines Aztec heritage, minting history and exceptional preservation.
