This Mexico 1 Onza Libertad silver coin, issued in 1991, represents the Type 2 KM-494.3 design, struck in .999 fine silver by the Mexican Mint and certified MS 64 by PCGS. The reverse depicts Winged Victory, the Angel of Independence, with outstretched feathered wings, a laurel wreath held overhead and flowing classical drapery. Behind her are the volcanic peaks Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl and the Valley of Mexico, accompanied by 1 ONZA, PLATA PURA, Mo mint mark, 1991 MEXICO and LEY .999. The obverse displays Mexico’s national coat of arms: an eagle with layered feathers gripping a snake in its beak and talon while standing on a prickly pear cactus. Detailed cactus pads and fruit, oak and laurel branches tied below, and ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS complete the national composition. The Type 2 lettering and design details distinguish this 1991 variety from the earlier Type 1 issue. Certified PCGS MS 64, it is a desirable early Libertad for Mexican and world silver collections.
