This 2000 Mexico 20 Pesos bimetallic coin, KM-638, commemorates the millennium through the legacy of Octavio Paz, one of Mexico’s most influential writers and intellectuals. The reverse features a finely modeled portrait of Paz within the silver-colored center, accompanied by his facsimile signature and the quotation “Todo es presencia, todos los siglos son este Presente.” The golden-colored outer ring carries the $20 denomination, Mexican Mint mark and AÑO 2000, framed by a geometric border. The obverse presents Mexico’s national coat of arms: an eagle with detailed plumage gripping a rattlesnake while standing on a prickly pear cactus, surrounded by oak and laurel branches and ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS. Paz was a poet, essayist and diplomat whose exploration of Mexican identity and modern culture earned him the 1990 Nobel Prize in Literature. Certified PCGS MS65, this attractive Millennium issue combines literature, national heritage and distinctive bimetallic coinage in a desirable collector piece.
