This 1962 Mexico Battle of Puebla silver medal, cataloged as Grove-800a, commemorates the centenary of Mexico's historic victory on May 5, 1862. The obverse portrays a uniformed military commander on a rearing horse, with detailed reins, epaulettes, sword, and flowing tail. Puebla's cathedral, a cannon, cannonballs, an agave plant, and military equipment complete the scene, alongside the inscriptions HEROICA BATALLA DEL 5 DE MAYO DE 1862, PUEBLA, and CENTENARIO. The reverse features Mexico's national eagle gripping a snake while standing on a cactus, surrounded by prickly pear fruits, oak and laurel branches, and the inscription ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS. The Battle of Puebla marked General Ignacio Zaragoza's remarkable victory over French forces, becoming an enduring symbol of Mexican courage and sovereignty. Struck in silver, this historical commemorative combines expressive relief, patriotic imagery, and cultural significance. An excellent addition to Mexican military history and numismatic collections.
