This 1976 Mexico 10 Pesos Republic coin is an impressive copper-nickel mint error certified MS65 by PCGS and designated Broadstruck. The portrait side presents Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla facing left, with a high forehead, defined facial features, prominent ear and carefully engraved waves of hair. The denomination 10 Pesos and date 1976 appear around the portrait. Hidalgo was a priest and revolutionary leader whose call for uprising in 1810 helped initiate Mexico’s struggle for independence, making his portrait one of the country’s important historical numismatic symbols. The opposite side displays the Mexican national coat of arms: a large eagle with raised, richly layered wings holding a curved serpent in its beak and talon while standing on a prickly pear cactus. Detailed cactus pads, fruit, oak and laurel foliage and a tied ribbon complete the design beneath the national legend. The broadstrike error is evident from the expanded, uneven polygonal perimeter and displaced border, giving this high-grade MS65 specimen a distinctive appearance. An attractive certified error for collectors of Mexican Republic coinage, historical themes and unusual minting varieties.
