This 1980 Mexico 5 Pesos CuNi coin features a striking off-center minting error, certified PCGS MS64. The obverse depicts Quetzalcoatl, the Feathered Serpent deity of ancient Mesoamerican mythology, represented by a detailed serpent head with an open mouth, prominent teeth, spiral ornaments, feathers and an elaborate headdress. The $5 denomination, Mexican mint mark, 1980 date and QUETZALCOATL inscription complete the design. The reverse features Mexico's national coat of arms, showing an eagle with spread wings holding a serpent while perched on a prickly pear cactus, surrounded by cactus fruits, oak and laurel branches and the ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS inscription. The visibly displaced strike creates an uneven border and a broad unstruck area, making this example especially distinctive. Quetzalcoatl symbolizes knowledge, wind and creation in Mesoamerican traditions. This certified Mint State error combines ancient mythology with an unusual production defect.
