This Mexico 50 Centavos coin from 1980 features Cuauhtemoc, the last Aztec emperor, and an unusual partial split mint error. Struck in copper-nickel and certified PCGS MS66, this collectible combines Mexican heritage with minting irregularity. The obverse depicts Cuauhtemoc facing left, wearing an elaborate feathered headdress with curved plumes, circular ornaments, hanging tassels, a large decorative earring, necklace and patterned clothing. The inscription CINCUENTA CENTAVOS surrounds his portrait. The reverse features Mexico's national coat of arms: an eagle with outstretched wing holding a serpent, perched on a prickly pear cactus with rounded fruits, framed by oak and laurel branches tied with a ribbon. The inscription ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS completes the design. Cuauhtemoc led the defense of Tenochtitlan in 1521 and remains a symbol of resistance. The partial split error adds numismatic interest to this MS66-certified coin, making it an appealing acquisition for collectors.
