A new coin, a capsule.
The 2009 Malawi 5 Kwacha silver coin commemorates 2,000 years since the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest, a decisive clash of Roman and Germanic history fought in AD 9. The reverse centers on a finely reproduced Roman funerary monument showing a legionary in military armor flanked by two smaller figures. Roman-style column capitals appear on both sides, while a large laurel wreath frames the composition and references Legions XVII, XVIII and XIX, the three formations destroyed in the battle. The disaster occurred when an alliance of Germanic tribes led by Arminius ambushed the forces commanded by Publius Quinctilius Varus, profoundly affecting Rome’s expansion east of the Rhine. The obverse displays Malawi’s national coat of arms with shield, wavy bands, heraldic lion, rising sun, lion and leopard supporters, helmet and eagle crest. Struck in silver with bright Prooflike surfaces, this historically themed issue combines Roman military history, ancient archaeology and detailed heraldic art.
