The 1997 Malawi 20 Kwacha silver coin honors Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother through an unusual historical theme: her early connection with the Girl Guide movement. The reverse portrays young Elizabeth in a detailed 1920 Girl Guide uniform with broad-brimmed hat, neckerchief, belt and shoulder cord. Beside her, two young Guides in dresses and hats carry a cooking pot, while a small campfire of crossed logs evokes outdoor scouting life; tiny decorative emblems and a beaded border complete the scene. Elizabeth became associated with the Girl Guides in her youth and later maintained a long connection with the organization. The obverse displays Malawi’s elaborate national coat of arms: a shield with wavy bands, lion and rising sun, supported by a lion and leopard, topped by a helmet and eagle crest, with foliage and the “Unity and Freedom” ribbon below. A distinctive silver Proof-style collectible combining royal history, youth organizations and Malawian numismatics.
