A new coin, a capsule.
The 2003 Malawi 10 Kwacha silver coin commemorates the first anniversary of the death of Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, one of the most recognizable figures of the British royal family. The portrait side presents the Queen Mother in advanced age, wearing an elegant hat decorated with floral elements, pearl jewelry and a prominent flower at her shoulder. The surrounding design records her name and the years 1900–2002. The opposite side displays the detailed national coat of arms of Malawi: a central shield with stylized landscape and rising sun motifs, supported by a lion and leopard, with an eagle above and the national motto on a ribbon below. The date 2003 and 10 Kwacha denomination complete the composition. Elizabeth, wife of King George VI and mother of Queen Elizabeth II, became especially associated with public service and British national life during World War II. Struck in silver with a brilliant proof-style finish, this memorial issue combines royal history, heraldry and African numismatics in an attractive collectible.
