The 2010 Malawi 20 Kwacha “Salt Routes – Kolobrzeg–Wielkopolska–Poznan” silver Proof coin explores the historic salt trade connecting the Baltic coast with inland commercial centers. Its detailed reverse presents a panoramic journey from Kolobrzeg on the Mare Balticum to Poznan: a distant coastal cityscape with towers and rooftops rises above a textured landscape, while the foreground features monumental historic architecture and two pack horses carrying woven baskets of goods. A contrasting golden circular insert adds an unusual decorative accent. The obverse depicts the crowned portrait of Queen Elizabeth II over a stylized geographic map, together with Kolobrzeg and Wielkopolska and a tiny horse-drawn covered merchant wagon. Salt was indispensable for food preservation and commerce, making such routes important channels of European economic development. Combining silver, Proof finish, cartography, architecture and transport history, this unusual thematic issue has strong collector appeal.
