The Malawi 50 Kwacha Jan Matejko 2009 set comprises six colored silver coins celebrating one of Poland’s most important historical painters. Matejko (1838–1893) became renowned for monumental compositions depicting defining personalities and episodes of Polish history. Each coin presents a different full-color reproduction framed by architectural ornament and the artist’s name: dramatic royal and military gatherings, battle scenes filled with cavalry, soldiers, banners and weapons, a scholar surrounded by books and scientific instruments, and a seated historical figure in vivid red clothing. The opposite sides expand the historical theme with finely engraved portraits, crowned rulers, knights, swords and staffs, medieval buildings, university architecture and Nicolaus Copernicus beside a heliocentric astronomical diagram. Each also carries the Malawi denomination, 2009 date, national emblem and a small Queen Elizabeth II portrait. Combining painting, history, architecture and selective color, this complete six-coin silver set is a striking collectible for admirers of European art and historical numismatics.
