The Malawi 50 Kwacha 2009 Jan Matejko set unites six colored silver coins celebrating the great Polish historical painter Jan Matejko (1838–1893), famous for monumental scenes that transformed national history into dramatic art. The reverses reproduce six richly colored paintings: Prussian Homage, Stanczyk, Jan III Sobieski at Vienna, Battle of Grunwald, Astronomer Copernicus, and Stefan Batory at Pskov. Tiny square decorative elements, Matejko’s portrait, architectural silhouettes and his dates frame each artwork. The obverses complement the paintings with detailed portraits of historical rulers, commanders and scholars, including Albert Hohenzollern, Sigismund I, Alexander Jagiellon, Jan III Sobieski, Kara Mustafa Pasha, Wladyslaw II Jagiello, Ulrich von Jungingen, Nicolaus Copernicus and Stefan Batory, alongside castles, churches, swords, armor, heraldic shields and an astronomical diagram. Each silver coin carries the 50 MWK denomination, Malawi symbols and 2009 date. A spectacular fusion of fine art, history and numismatics.
