A new coin.
This 1971 Mauritius 1/4 Rupee copper-nickel coin is an attractive early post-independence Proof issue, certified PCGS PR67 DCAM and identified as KM-36. The obverse presents a right-facing crowned portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, with carefully modeled facial features, hair, crown and necklace, encircled by the royal legend and a fine denticled border. The reverse displays a symbolic floral composition beneath a royal crown: a rose, a stylized flower and a central fleur-de-lis, surrounded by small stars. The inscriptions MAURITIUS and QUARTER RUPEE frame the design, with the 1971 date at right and small KG initials below the central motif. Mauritius became independent in 1968 while retaining Elizabeth II as Queen until becoming a republic in 1992, giving this issue historical significance within the country’s modern coinage. Its Deep Cameo Proof finish emphasizes the crisp relief against reflective fields, while PCGS PR67 DCAM certification adds strong collector appeal.
