This 2008 Moldova 100 Lei KM-46 silver Proof coin honors Antioh Cantemir (1708–1744), an influential poet, diplomat and pioneer of Russian literary satire. Certified PCGS PR68, this collectible celebrates the 300th anniversary of his birth. The reverse presents a detailed portrait of Cantemir with long curled hair, an embroidered 18th-century coat, decorative buttons, lace cuffs and a fur-trimmed sleeve. He holds an open manuscript with handwritten lines, emphasizing his literary achievements. The inscriptions ANTIOH CANTEMIR and 1708–1744 surround the portrait. The obverse displays Moldova's national coat of arms: an eagle with outstretched wings holding a cross, olive branch and scepter, supporting a shield with an aurochs head, star, rose and crescent. REPUBLICA MOLDOVA, 2008 and 100 LEI complete the design. Cantemir helped shape modern Russian poetry through his satirical works. An appealing addition to collections of literature, historical figures and European silver coins.
