The Malta 1 Lira silver coin of 1973 honors Sir Temi Zammit, one of Malta’s most distinguished physicians, scientists, archaeologists, historians and writers. The obverse presents a detailed left-facing portrait of Zammit in formal attire, accompanied by his name, the date 1973 and his life dates 1864–1935. His scientific career was especially significant for research into Mediterranean fever, while his archaeological and literary work made him an influential figure in Maltese cultural scholarship. The reverse displays Malta’s elaborate national coat of arms of the period: a vertically divided shield supported by two stylized heraldic dolphins, surrounded by decorative foliage, topped by a mural crown and accompanied by a flowing ribbon. The denomination appears below the portrait, while MALTA frames the heraldic composition. Struck in silver, this commemorative issue combines portraiture, medicine, science, literature, archaeology and Maltese national symbolism in an attractive collector format. An excellent choice for collectors of famous people, European history and Maltese numismatics.
