The Malta 10 Euro silver Proof coin of 2013 celebrates Dun Karm Psaila, Malta’s celebrated poet, priest and major figure in Maltese literature. The obverse features a finely frosted frontal portrait of the elderly poet wearing clerical attire and a traditional cap, surrounded by his name and designation as poet. His life dates 1871–1961 appear beside the portrait, together with the 10 Euro denomination, while a small emblem and a delicate handwritten verse reproduced across his clothing add literary character. Dun Karm is regarded as Malta’s national poet and played an important role in establishing Maltese as a respected literary language; he also wrote the words that became Malta’s national anthem. The reverse displays the Maltese national coat of arms with a crowned shield bearing the George Cross and vertical stripes, framed by olive and palm branches tied with a ribbon. Twelve stars surround the composition, with Malta and 2013 completing the design. Struck in silver with a brilliant Proof finish, this elegant issue unites poetry, literature, national identity and portrait art, making it a distinctive modern Maltese collectible.
