The 1996 Marshall Islands 50 Dollars Evening Star silver Proof coin celebrates classic steam railway engineering through an impressive portrait of the famous British locomotive Evening Star. The obverse shows the locomotive in three-quarter view, with its long cylindrical boiler, smokebox, chimney, cab and tender carefully modeled alongside large spoked driving wheels, smaller leading wheels, connecting rods, valve gear, buffers and track. A massive textured plume of smoke and steam sweeps across the upper field, adding movement and drama to the mechanical composition. Evening Star, BR Standard Class 9F No. 92220, entered service in 1960 and became historically significant as the last steam locomotive built for British Railways. The reverse displays the Marshall Islands national seal with a winged central figure, radiant sun, palm trees, vegetation, traditional sailing canoe, ocean and geometric motifs, surrounded by an ornamental chain border. Struck in silver with a brilliant Proof finish, this 1996 issue is an appealing tribute to railway history, British transport and steam-era engineering.
