This Mexico 5 pesos silver coin, issued in 1950, celebrates the inauguration of the Southern Railroad, a major achievement connecting southeastern Mexico with the national railway network. The reverse depicts a detailed steam locomotive with its boiler, smokestack, headlamp, wheels, pistons, and connecting rods, traveling along railway tracks. Two palm trees, tropical vegetation, distant woodland, and a radiant rising sun marked 1950 surround the train. The inscription INAUGURACION DEL FERROCARRIL DEL SURESTE frames the composition. The obverse features Mexico's national coat of arms: an eagle holding a serpent while perched on a cactus, surrounded by oak and laurel branches tied with a ribbon. The inscriptions ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS, CINCO PESOS, LEY 0.720, and Mo 1950 complete the design. Struck in .720 silver, this KM-466 coin displays distinctive natural toning, adding character to its historical railway imagery. An attractive addition to any collection.
