A new coin.
This Mexico 5 pesos silver coin, issued in 1950, celebrates the inauguration of the Ferrocarril del Sureste, an important railway connecting southeastern Mexico with the national transport network. The reverse portrays a detailed steam locomotive with its boiler, smokestack, headlamp, driving wheels, connecting rods, and railway tracks, surrounded by palm trees and tropical vegetation. Behind the train, a rising sun with long rays and the date 1950 symbolize progress. The inscription INAUGURACION DEL FERROCARRIL DEL SURESTE frames the design. The obverse features Mexico's national eagle grasping a serpent while standing on a prickly pear cactus, accompanied by oak and laurel branches, the inscriptions ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS and CINCO PESOS, and the Mo mint mark. Struck in .720 silver, this KM-466 commemorative is certified PCGS MS64. Its historic railway imagery and attractive detail make it a desirable addition to any collection.
