This 1994 Mexico 5 Pesos silver coin, KM-574, belongs to the Pre-Columbian series and celebrates the Chac Mool, a distinctive sculptural form found at important Mesoamerican archaeological sites and associated particularly with Maya and Toltec culture. The reverse depicts a reclining Chac Mool figure resting on a rectangular stone platform, its head turned toward the viewer. Fine details include the patterned headdress, large rectangular ear ornaments, necklace, textured body, hands resting on the abdomen, bent knees, ankle bands and feet. The sculpture is enclosed within an angular frame surrounded by repeated pre-Columbian geometric symbols, alongside the 1994 date, Mexico City mint mark, “CHAAC-MOOL” and N$5 denomination. The obverse features Mexico’s national eagle grasping a snake while standing on a prickly pear cactus above oak and laurel branches, with “ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS.” The matching symbolic border and “1 ONZA DE PLATA LEY 0.999” complete the design. Struck in .999 silver, this archaeological-themed issue is an appealing addition to collections of Maya art and Mexican numismatics.
