This Mexico 100 Pesos 2013 bimetallic coin from the Numismatic Heritage series pays tribute to the early colonial coinage issued under Carlos I of Spain and Juana of Castile. The central historic design reproduces a Carlos and Juana coin with two crowned pillars rising from stylized bases, a horizontal banner between them, the letter R below and fragments of the original surrounding legend. The silver-colored center is framed by a golden-colored ring bearing “HERENCIA NUMISMATICA DE MEXICO,” the Mo Mexico City mint mark, 2013 date, $100 denomination and a dotted border. The reverse features Mexico’s national coat of arms: a powerful eagle with spread, layered wings holding a snake while standing on a prickly pear cactus with visible pads and fruits. Oak and laurel branches tied by a ribbon complete the emblem beneath the legend “ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS.” Carlos and Juana coinage belongs to the formative period of Spanish colonial numismatics in Mexico and reflects the beginnings of minting traditions that became highly influential throughout the Americas. Certified PCGS PL69, this attractive bimetallic issue combines colonial history, classic coin imagery and modern Mexican craftsmanship.
