A new coin.
This 1981 Mexico 10 Pesos Republic coin is an unusual mint error certified AU53 by PCGS and identified as Broadstruck, giving the piece a visibly irregular, expanded outline instead of the normal controlled shape. Struck in copper-nickel, the portrait side depicts Mexican independence leader Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla facing left, with carefully modeled facial features, receding hairline and distinctive wavy hair. The denomination 10 Pesos and date 1981 surround the portrait. Hidalgo was a Catholic priest whose 1810 call for revolt became a defining event in the beginning of Mexico’s War of Independence, making his portrait an important national motif. The opposite side carries Mexico’s coat of arms: an eagle with layered wings and feathers holding a serpent while standing on a prickly pear cactus, surrounded by the national legend. Oak and laurel branches with leaves and a tied ribbon complete the lower design. The broadstrike error is especially evident along the uneven perimeter, where metal expanded beyond its intended striking boundaries. Combining Mexican history, a dramatic production error and PCGS certification, this AU53 coin is a distinctive addition to an error-coin collection.
