This 1998 Mexico 10 Pesos, KM-616 and Schön-180a, is a distinctive bimetallic coin certified MS 66 by PCGS. Its two-tone composition provides a dramatic setting for imagery connecting Mexico’s pre-Columbian heritage with its modern national identity. The reverse reproduces the central portion of the Aztec Sun Stone: a stylized face of Tonatiuh occupies the center, encircled by elaborate glyphs, geometric panels, circular symbols and intricate Aztec motifs. The outer ring carries the $10 denomination, 1998 date, Mo mint mark and DIEZ PESOS. On the obverse, Mexico’s national coat of arms shows a finely feathered eagle grasping a snake in its beak and talon while perched upon a prickly pear cactus with visible pads and fruits. Oak and laurel branches tied with a ribbon complete the composition beneath the eagle, while ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS curves above. The Sun Stone is among the most recognizable surviving works of Aztec art and reflects the civilization’s complex cosmology and calendrical traditions. Preserved in impressive PCGS MS 66 condition, this coin is an appealing choice for collectors of Mexican history, Aztec art and certified world coinage.
