This 1981 Mexico 10 Pesos coin is a distinctive CuNi Republic issue featuring Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla and an unusual clipped planchet mint error, certified AU58 by PCGS. The obverse presents a left-facing portrait of Hidalgo, with his characteristic high forehead, spectacles and swept-back hair, surrounded by the denomination DIEZ PESOS and the date 1981. Hidalgo, a Catholic priest and revolutionary leader, initiated the Mexican War of Independence in 1810 and became one of the central figures of Mexican national history. The reverse displays Mexico’s national coat of arms: an eagle with detailed wings and feathers gripping a serpent while perched on a prickly pear cactus, accompanied by oak and laurel branches, leaves and a tied ribbon beneath the legend ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS. Most importantly, the coin shows a clearly visible clipped planchet with missing curved sections along the rim, giving this individual example a striking mint-made irregularity. The combination of historical portraiture, national symbolism, error coinage and PCGS certification makes it especially attractive for specialized collectors.
