This Mexico 1 Onza Libertad silver coin, issued in 1991, is an early Type 1 KM-494.2 variety struck in .999 fine silver by the Mexican Mint and certified an impressive MS 68 by PCGS. The reverse portrays Winged Victory, the Angel of Independence, with finely feathered wings spread behind her, a laurel wreath raised overhead and flowing classical drapery. Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl form the mountainous background, accompanied by 1 onza, PLATA PURA, Mo mint mark, 1991 MEXICO and Ley .999. The obverse features Mexico’s national coat of arms: an eagle gripping a snake while perched on a fruit-bearing prickly pear cactus, with detailed oak and laurel branches below and ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS above. Numista records 1,650,518 pieces for this 1991 KM-494.2 Type 1 obverse/reverse variety. Its high MS 68 certification makes this classic early Libertad especially attractive for a quality-focused collection.
