The 2002 Mexico 1 Onza Libertad is a .999 fine silver bullion coin distinguished by one of the most celebrated designs of modern Mexican numismatics. The reverse portrays the Winged Victory, or Angel of Independence, standing atop her column with sweeping feathered wings, an extended arm and flowing classical drapery. Behind her appear the volcanic peaks of Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl, with a detailed valley, fields, vegetation and cactus completing the landscape. The inscriptions include 1 ONZA, PLATA PURA, 2002, LEY .999 and the Mo mint mark. The obverse presents Mexico’s national coat of arms: an eagle gripping a snake while perched on a prickly pear cactus, above oak and laurel branches tied with a ribbon. Ten historic versions of the Mexican eagle emblem encircle the central arms beneath ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS, representing the evolution of Mexico’s national heraldry. Natural toning visible on this example adds individual character to this classic Libertad silver issue.
