The 2001 Mexico 1 Onza Libertad is a .999 fine silver bullion coin combining precious metal with some of Mexico’s most recognizable national imagery. The reverse centers on the Winged Victory, inspired by the Angel of Independence monument in Mexico City, standing on her column with extended feathered wings and flowing drapery. Behind her rise the volcanic peaks Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl, with a detailed valley landscape, vegetation and cactus below. The inscriptions include 1 ONZA, PLATA PURA, 2001, LEY .999 and the Mo mint mark. The obverse displays Mexico’s current national coat of arms—an eagle gripping a snake while perched on a prickly pear cactus, framed by oak and laurel branches and ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS. Surrounding it are ten historical versions of the Mexican eagle emblem, creating a striking survey of the nation’s heraldic heritage. A desirable Libertad for collectors of Mexican silver, national symbols and world bullion coins.
