This 2001 Mexico 1 Onza Libertad, KM-639, is a .999 fine silver bullion coin celebrating Mexico’s independence, history and national identity. The reverse depicts the Winged Victory, or Angel of Independence, standing atop her monumental column with outstretched wings, extended arm and flowing classical drapery. Behind her rise the famous Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl volcanoes, accompanied by mountain ridges, fields and small plants. The inscriptions include 1 ONZA PLATA PURA, 2001, LEY .999 and the Mexican Mint mark. The obverse introduces the distinctive modern Libertad composition: Mexico’s current national coat of arms occupies the center, showing an eagle grasping a serpent while perched on a prickly pear cactus, framed by oak and laurel branches and a ribbon. Around it appear ten historic versions of the Mexican eagle emblem, tracing the evolution of this powerful national symbol. A fascinating bullion issue with rich historical imagery and an elaborate heraldic design, it is an appealing addition to Mexican and world silver collections.
