This 2013 Mexico 1/4 Onza Libertad is a .999 fine silver proof coin celebrating one of Mexico’s most recognizable symbols of independence and national identity. The reverse depicts the Winged Victory, or Angel of Independence, standing on her monumental column with finely modeled wings, flowing drapery and an outstretched arm. The dramatic landscape behind her features the volcanic peaks Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl, mountain slopes, valley fields, vegetation and small distant details. The inscriptions identify 1/4 ONZA, PLATA PURA, 2013 and LEY .999, accompanied by the Mexican Mint mark. The obverse displays Mexico’s national coat of arms: a powerful eagle grasping a serpent while perched on a prickly pear cactus. Detailed feathers, cactus pads and fruits, rocks, oak and laurel branches, leaves, berries, a tied ribbon and the surrounding national legend complete the composition. The polished proof fields and frosted relief give this modern Libertad exceptional visual depth and make it an appealing addition to Mexican and world silver collections.
