A new coin.
This 1988 Mexico 1/2 Onza silver coin was issued for the 14th International Numismatic Convention in Mexico City and is certified PCGS PR68DCAM. Its design pays tribute to the historic Spanish colonial Pillar Dollar, one of the most influential silver coins in international commerce. One side recreates the famous crowned Pillars of Hercules rising from stylized waves, with two crowned globes between them, floral ornaments, the date 1732 and the motto VTRAQUE VNUM. The opposite side displays an elaborate crowned Spanish royal shield divided into heraldic fields with castles, lions and the central Bourbon emblem, surrounded by a Latin royal legend. Additional inscriptions identify 1/2 ONZA, 1988 and PLATA .999 PROO. The deeply reflective fields and frosted relief create the strong contrast characteristic of the Deep Cameo Proof finish. Combining Mexican numismatic history, colonial coin imagery and PCGS PR68DCAM certification, this special convention issue is an appealing choice for collectors of silver proofs and historic monetary designs.
