This Mauritius 50 Rupees silver coin from 1975 is dedicated to the Mauritius kestrel, an endemic bird of prey and an important symbol of the island’s unique fauna. The obverse features the elegant right-facing young portrait of Queen Elizabeth II wearing a jeweled tiara, with finely modeled hair, facial features and draped neckline. The surrounding legend names Queen Elizabeth II and includes the date 1975, while a beaded border frames the design. The reverse presents a dramatic Mauritius kestrel in flight, its wings extended and individual feathers carefully defined. The raptor grips a small lizard in its talons, creating a vivid wildlife scene, surrounded by MAURITIUS and the 50 RUPEES denomination. The Mauritius kestrel (Falco punctatus) is found naturally only on Mauritius, giving this issue particular appeal for collectors of endemic wildlife and conservation themes. The coin is a non-circulating silver issue, KM-41/41a, with the design engraved by Christopher Ironside.
