A new coin.
This 1971 Mauritius 10 Rupees silver coin, KM-38a, commemorates the independence of Mauritius and is certified by PCGS as PR65 DCAM. The obverse presents a detailed right-facing portrait of Queen Elizabeth II wearing a crown and necklace, surrounded by her title and the date 1971. The reverse is devoted to one of Mauritius’s most famous national symbols: the extinct dodo bird. Shown standing in profile, the dodo features a large curved beak, textured plumage, small wings, sturdy legs and characteristic tail feathers. The surrounding design reads MAURITIUS INDEPENDENCE and 10 RUPEES, with small dots separating the inscriptions. Mauritius achieved independence from Britain in 1968, while the dodo, a flightless bird once native exclusively to the island, has become an internationally recognized symbol of Mauritian natural heritage and extinction. The silver composition, Deep Cameo Proof finish and PCGS PR65 DCAM certification give this historic wildlife issue strong collector appeal.
