The 1996 Marshall Islands 50 Dollars “Mallard” silver coin celebrates one of the most celebrated steam locomotives in railway history. Struck in Proof, its railway-themed side presents the streamlined Mallard in a dramatic three-quarter view, with its aerodynamic casing, large driving wheels, smaller wheels, tender, buffers, headlamp details, rails and a dense plume of steam dominating the composition. The locomotive name, 1996 date and Fifty Dollars denomination accompany the scene. Mallard, an LNER Class A4 locomotive designed by Sir Nigel Gresley, became famous in 1938 for setting the world speed record for a steam locomotive at 126 mph, a record that still stands. The reverse carries the Marshall Islands national seal with a winged central figure, radiant sun, crossed implements, traditional island symbols, palm tree, flowers and vegetation, sailing canoe, birds, ocean lines, geometric star forms and an ornamental chain border. Combining transport history, engineering heritage and detailed Proof artistry, this silver issue is an excellent collectible for railway, locomotive and world coin enthusiasts.
