Malta 5 liri Year of the Child KM-53 UNICEF proof silver coin 1981

The Malta 5 Liri 1981 silver Proof coin, KM-53, celebrates childhood and the humanitarian ideals associated with UNICEF. Its lively reverse captures children at play: one girl bends forward during a hopscotch game, reaching toward numbered squares, while another child watches with hands in pockets. A girl with ribbon-tied pigtails holds hands with a younger boy carrying a ball. The hopscotch grid, numbers, UNICEF-style child emblem, small wreath portrait emblem, denomination and date enrich this charming composition. The obverse presents a traditional Maltese maritime scene with a luzzu-style fishing boat on rippling water, a high radiant sun, shoreline, cactus-like vegetation and a foreground quay with mooring details. Issued in silver with a Proof finish, the coin reflects the international focus on children’s welfare, protection and development promoted around the period of the International Year of the Child. A wonderful collectible combining childhood, games, humanitarian themes, Malta and Mediterranean culture.
