The Malta 1 Lira silver coin of 1972 commemorates Manwel Dimech, an influential Maltese philosopher, writer, journalist and social reformer. The obverse presents a finely modeled left-facing portrait of Dimech in a jacket and high-collared shirt, with his distinctive moustache clearly rendered. A slender palm branch appears beside his life dates 1860–1921, while the denomination and issue year balance the composition. Dimech became known for advocating education, social improvement and greater political awareness among ordinary Maltese people, making him a notable figure in Malta’s modern intellectual and social history. The reverse is dominated by Malta’s historic coat of arms: a vertically divided shield with detailed heraldic elements, flanked by two stylized dolphin supporters with curling tails and fins, framed by foliage and surmounted by an elaborate mural crown. A flowing ribbon completes the heraldic design. Struck in silver, this portrait coin combines philosophy, literature, social history and Maltese national symbolism, making it an appealing addition to a collection of European commemoratives and famous personalities.
