The Maldives 1 Larin of 1901 (AH 1319), KM-38, is a fascinating copper circulation coin from the reign of Sultan Muhammad Imaaduddeen VI, whose rule lasted from 1893 to 1902. Certified PCGS MS64, this historic piece preserves an exceptionally attractive example of Maldivian coinage from the turn of the 20th century. The obverse is dominated by deeply engraved Arabic calligraphy arranged in several horizontal lines, identifying the Sultan, with flowing strokes, dots and compact ornamental letter forms framed by a finely patterned border. The reverse continues the calligraphic design with the ruler’s title and Hijri date, including the traditional designation “Sultan of the land and the sea.” Warm copper surfaces display appealing reddish-brown and violet toning, while the bold raised script gives the small coin remarkable visual character. A scarce high-grade survivor combining Islamic calligraphy, royal history and Indian Ocean numismatics, it is an excellent addition to a serious Maldives or world coin collection.
