The 1972 Malaysia 1 Ringgit KM-12 commemorative coin celebrates Kuala Lumpur’s elevation to city status, a landmark event in the history of Malaysia’s capital. Struck in copper-nickel and certified PCGS MS66, this high-grade issue features a distinctive symbolic design. One side displays three interlocking hexagonal forms representing the city’s identity and development. The upper hexagon contains a crescent and radiating star, while the lower sections feature additional stylized emblems, including geometric, floral and orbital-like motifs. A swirling central element visually unites the three forms, surrounded by Kuala Lumpur and city-related wording, with a decorative scalloped border. The opposite side presents a large stylized $1 denomination, the year 1972 and circular national minting authority text. Kuala Lumpur received official city status on February 1, 1972, becoming Malaysia’s first settlement formally granted that status after independence. Its abstract civic symbolism, historical significance, attractive CuNi surface and excellent PCGS MS66 certification make this a desirable Malaysian commemorative.
