The Malawi 50 Kwacha “80th Anniversary of Vasily Shukshin” 2009 gilded silver coin commemorates the celebrated writer, actor and film director Vasily Shukshin (1929–1974). Its richly detailed reverse combines a selectively gilded seated portrait of Shukshin with a panoramic rural landscape of wooden houses, rooftops, hills and trees, evoking the village world central to his creative legacy. Above, gilded clusters of viburnum berries and silver leaves reference his famous film The Red Snowball Tree, while gilded wheat ears accent the foreground. The obverse displays Malawi’s national coat of arms with shield, rising sun, helmet, eagle, lion and leopard supporters and the Unity and Freedom motto. The 2009 date, 50 Kwacha denomination and Ag 999/1000 silver fineness appear around the heraldic composition. Shukshin became renowned for stories and films portraying village life, ordinary people and complex human character. Combining literature, cinema, landscape and selective gilding, this commemorative issue has strong artistic and cultural appeal.
