The 2014 Latvia 5 Euro “Old Stender” silver coin commemorates the 300th anniversary of Gotthard Friedrich Stender (1714–1796), an important Enlightenment writer, pastor, educator and promoter of Latvian-language learning. The obverse recreates a theme from the title page of his 1774 “Book of High Wisdom on the World and Nature”: a pastor points out the wonders of the world to a young boy, with an open book below, rolling landscape, tree, church, fields and a sweeping celestial arc completing the scene. The reverse presents Stender’s progressive heliocentric vision of the universe through a dramatic Sun, orbital bands, astronomical forms and numerical markings. Stender studied philosophy and theology and devoted much of his later life to education and literature for Latvian readers. Struck in .925 silver in Proof quality with a mintage of 10,000, this example is certified PCGS PR69DCAM.
