Latvia 1 Lats 2011 “800 Years of Coinage Right of Riga” is a .925 silver Proof commemorative celebrating eight centuries since Riga received the right to mint its own money in 1211. The obverse recreates a medieval pfennig from the era of Bishop Albert: a frontal bishop wearing a mitre, holding a cross and crosier, surrounded by RIGAS NAUDAI 800, the dates 1211 and 2011, denomination 1 LATS and a beaded border. The reverse again places the historic pfennig at its heart, surrounded by a medieval-style Latin legend, crossed cross and crosier symbolizing the Archbishopric of Riga, and another pearl border. The design creates a striking “coin within a coin” effect, connecting modern Latvian numismatics directly with Riga’s medieval monetary heritage. Issued by the Bank of Latvia and struck by the Mint of Finland, this Proof had a limited mintage of only 5,000 pieces. This exceptional example is certified PCGS PR69DCAM, offering superb preservation and deep cameo contrast.
