A new coin, an unoriginal capsule (please, check photos).
Liberia 10 Dollars 2001 “Princess Louisa” is an unusual copper-toned maritime coin dedicated to the East Indiaman Princess Louisa and her tragic 1743 voyage to India. The reverse depicts the historic sailing vessel battling the sea, with a high wooden hull, multiple masts, large billowing sails, rigging and waves rendered in relief. The accompanying text records that Princess Louisa was wrecked on April 18, 1743 near the Maio Islands of Cape Verde. A distinctive transparent inset containing a greenish fragment-like element adds striking visual character to the nautical composition. The obverse displays Liberia’s coat of arms with a sailing ship, palm tree, rising sun, flying bird, plow, shield and ribbons, together with the divided 2001 date, 10 Dollars denomination and a second matching inset. Combining shipwreck history, seafaring imagery, antique-style copper surfaces and an unusual embedded element, this issue is a memorable collectible for maritime and world numismatic collections.
