The Liberia 20 Dollars 2001 silver coin from the Legends of the Rails series celebrates John Bull, one of the most historically significant early steam locomotives in American railway history. The reverse features a finely rendered side view of the pioneering locomotive, with tall smokestack releasing billowing clouds of steam, boiler, exposed piping, domes, cab structure, tender, large spoked driving wheels, smaller wheels, connecting components, rails and textured track bed. The surrounding design identifies the John Bull railway theme and denomination. Originally built in England by Robert Stephenson and Company in 1831 for the Camden and Amboy Railroad, John Bull became an important symbol of early American steam transportation. The obverse displays Liberia’s national coat of arms with a sailing ship on waves, rising sun, palm tree, plow and shovel, flying bird, shield and flowing ribbons, accompanied by the divided 2001 date and a segmented border. Struck in silver with attractive prooflike contrast, this detailed railway collectible connects transportation history, engineering and world numismatics.
